I figured it out!  Open Pollinated Seeds are the seeds you want to get if you want to save the seeds.  Hybrid seeds are bred for certain characteristics but if you save these seeds and regrow them you may get funny plants – like a weird cross between a melon and a cucumber.  So what are heirloom seeds?  I have used heirloom seeds, open pollinated seeds and non-hybrid seeds interchangeably but I finally found out that is not correct.  Heirloom seeds are open pollinated seeds that have been around for at least 50 years!

Some of our favorite open pollinated seeds are:

  • Chocolate Cherry Tomato – mmm
  • Persimmon Tomato
  • Cherokee Purple Tomato
  • Orange Carrot Chili Pepper
  • a bunch of other tomatoes but I need to figure out their names!

Happy Spring and Happy Gardening!
